This happens for me as well. I tracked down the problem to the file /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50php-mode.el I have attached a patch. ( I think, I am new at sending these to others. ** Attachment added: "This patches php-mode in edgy-eft to use php-mode instead of c-mode for files ending in .php"
