Huh. I didn't know that was possible. Why would that affect only the
ext2 partition?
It does work fine in other operating systems, including my previous
installation of jaunty. So it seems like it ought to be possible for it
to work in karmic.

I'm using sawfish, not metacity. Compiz is not installed.
I can reproduce the issue in a newly created user account by logging in
from gdm and running "killall metacity && sawfish &". Sawfish then
replaces metacity as the window manager. By default it has only one
workspace, but you can insert
I'm using sawfish. The workspace switcher does work as expected with
metacity. It doesn't override my sawfish configuration though; I still
have all my workspaces, though it only displays the current one.

I'm sorry I can't provide more detailed information. I haven't yet been
able to track down any specific trigger for the freeze. The mouse
cursor still moves, but the screen is otherwise unchanging and
unresponsive to keyboard input or mouse clicks.
I'm sorry, this looks like a problem with the iLiad which coincidentally
happened at the same time I upgraded to karmic. The file system check
comes up clean, but I get the same errors trying to mount it on other
