Very odd. I see exactly the behaviour reported here. I have:
1. Installed xsensors
2. Run `xsensors-detect` and allowed it to update /etc/modules (it has added
it87 and k8temp modules)
3. Rebooted
4. (In case it made any difference) Ran `sensors -s`
It looks as if xsensors has broken relatively
I can confirm this: have just updated to current patches to Hardy Heron.
Selecting System -> Preferences -> GL Desktop from the menu (which seems
to be exactly compiz-gnome-preferences) behaves exactly as described in

1. try to change Visual Effects from None to Norma
2. get message "The composite extension is not available"
3. message won't dismiss (clicking ok does nothing)
4. clicking the window close button [x] triggers the crash.
