I have discovered the cause of this problem.
I recently changed my system language from en-us (US English) to nl
(Dutch). Nautilus does not show me the free space on removable drives
when my system language is Dutch.
I just logged in with US English and Nautilus shows me the free space
again.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nautilus
Somewhere in the past two weeks Nautilus stopped showing me the 'free
space remaining' information in the status bar for my removable drives.
Nautilus shows 'N items, free space:' on CIFS and a local ext3 partition.
It does NOT show 'free space'
This is now fixed upstream.
