Bug #290742 over at bugs.kde.org states that this issue is resolved upstream in
the latest version of kmix.

I have the same problem with an Acer AL1916. It worked with gutsy, and
it works on my laptop's Intel GMA950. I'm going to try envy and see if
that helps.

I was actually in a situation where I couldn't start X, and didn't have
internet access. I must concur that there should be a relatively easy to
use console tool to configure X in case the autodetection fails. I don't
have the patience to write an xorg.conf!
