When you see GRUB, press "e" for edit boot options on Ubuntu. Then add
that line to the end of the options. If it works, great; but GRUB will
not remember preferences the next time you boot so, "sudo vi
/boot/grub/menu.lst" in a terminal and add it there.

I have this same issue with the Studio 1749. Sometimes it resumes to a
black (with no backlight) screen, and sometimes a tty screen that is
frozen (I have no control over).

So is this tty screen you're getting frozen? Because I have a similar
issue and when I resume from a suspend, I either get a black screen (no
backlight) or a frozen tty screen.
If its not frozen you can Ctrl+Alt+F7 back into the GUI.
