package can be downgraded, and a report can be filed against it.

Andy, as both of us have the same graphics card, I'll tell you what's
working for me; reinstall, but during the install, connect your machine
to the internet and check "upgrade during installation" (word of advice,
dont select install the mp3 plugins, they never work for me, just
install ubuntu-res
Update: I just reinstalled 11.04, and selected the option to update
while installing. Though it updated most, it did not update all, and I
was able to run the older, NVIDIA version 173 (the latest my card can

system would hang after login, forcing me to choose Ubuntu Classic. This
issue was resolved by selecting the experimental driver. Now, if I
select either of the 2 official NVIDIA drivers in Jockey, I get the

A couple of things- Jockey is now showing the driver "Experimental 3D
Support for NVIDIA Cards" as active, but no change, still puts me in
Gnome. This is a different bug than #768178, but there are some
