So to summarise I have exactly the same problem when I use ssh to
connect to Ubuntu 11.10 with all patches up to and including 8th of Feb
2012.
Output from "uname -a" is

My problem was slightly different in that the "busy device" would change
every time that I re-booted.
Removing the fake MD device allowed me assemble correctly and I am now
working. Thanks for the help.
