No, sorry I could not check this. As the installation finally did complete, I
didn't further investigate the issue (and I don't intend to repeat an
installation on my system just to verify the case).
It may well be, that I did not pay attention to a question window as Matthew
Addon to the previous comment: After restart of my system the GNOME
desktop is installed and available for use. So it seems that the
installation went well although (very) slowly.
I really wonder what the process (software center) was doing, as it
seems it was not very busy on CPU.

I have some further information which I attach hoping it will help to
solve the problem.
I ran strace against the Software Center's PID (5211) for a while
(twice, waiting a couple of minutes between the two traces). The output
is in the files strace_software_center.txt and
strace_software_
The Software Center is still running (since almost 20 hours), two new
progress bars have appeared saying "Searching waiting" - see screenshot.

I installed a recent 3.7 kernel and the bug was fixed (i.e. after
connecting and switching on the camera, the device was auto-mounted and
photos became accessible). By consequence I added the tag kernel-fixed-
upstream as suggested in the comment.

When I connect my Camera (Lumix LX5) on the USB port, it isn't automounted any
more. The last time I can confirm the device was automounted successfully is on
October 10, 2012.
