As a work-around, put the following in ~/.bashrc:

export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
export CLUTTER_IM_MODULE=ibus
When switching from xim to ibus as IM-module, Chromium accepts keyboard
input as usual again (in 14.04 LTS upgraded from 12.04 LTS).

Tested with Ubuntu 11.10 x64 (like the orginial report) in a virtual
machine. Since Firefox now uses PDF.js by default, the Adobe plug-in was
activated by opening about:config and setting pdfjs.disabled=true.
Unfortunately the bug still exists.

I have a generic no-name external USB case for ATA drives.
When trying to mount an IBM DeskStar 40GB disk (IC35L040 AVER07-0) I

For those wanting to use the Swedish "Bank ID" applet: removing the
"icedtea-gcjwebplugin" and using Sun Java 6, "sun-java6-plugin" (tested
with 6-06-0ubuntu1 from multiverse/web) instead, is a work-around for
this particular problem in Icedtea.

FYI p2k and others: on Shuttle motherboards the system clock frequency
