I've had exactly the same problems since installing 11.04 (used 10.04 before),
and this is really annoying.
My modem is Huawei E1752.
If anyone knows a workaround, post it somewhere. Thanks!

same problem here.
killall -9 "notification-area-applet" resolved the issue...but needs to be
launched every time.

is failing.

When trying to unlock the screen (locked by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or
coming from suspend/hibernate) XScreensaver asks for user password. But
in password field it is not possible to insert "€" sign (any other input
is showing one more "*" in p

No one of the suggested fix worked for me.
I've also installed the latest libmtp, updated libmtp.rules
etc...nothingI can only see the player in nautilus but I cannot
connect it in mtp mode nor as "generic audio player" in amarok...

With the live cd (ubuntu 8.04 final 64 bit), it works fine !!
But when I install ubuntu on HD, the nic doesn't work !!! It give me a series
of 0.0.0.0 ip, dns etc...
Ubuntu uses the same driver either with livecd and hd installation, but on hd,
it doesn't work !!
