Thanks for the speedy reply, yes perhaps it's time to upgrade the
motherboard, it's a shame though since 11.10 runs fine on this PC.

Michael, just curious to know from which Nvidia to which newer card you
upgraded. I have a fx5500 on AGP and as far as I can see the choice to
upgrade is very limited.
