With the Lucid development version, the bug has changed behavior. Now
both the images in my test case end up with poor resolution.

I have looked into this bug a bit more.
For some reason, the Ubuntu package has hard-coded Jack as the default
sound output instead of the default, which is auto-detection. Since Jack
isn't running on your computer, this causes playback to fail.
If you change the command above to:
espeak -w foo.w

I think it would be a very good idea to upgrade mhWaveEdit in Karmic to
version 1.4.16.
Since it adds PulseAudio support, it will integrate much better with
Ubuntu. The release has been tested on an Ubuntu netbook and both
playback and recordi
The error message is unfortunately a bit confusing. It means that the
combination of number of channels, sample format and sample rate can not
be played directly. I don't know what espeak generates but my guess is
that it will play if you convert the sample rate to 44100 Hz
The newest version 1.4.
Also tested the Abiword stable team's PPA package 2.6.8-5ubuntu0ppa2 and
built the source package from Karmic, both times with the same result.

As I wrote in an earlier comment, I did install the server kernel from
the Intrepid repo and rebooted and since then I haven't seen any oopses
for more than a week. Because this is a server running in production I
can not upgrade the whole distribution just for testing purposes.
If someone could
I have also gotten oopses at the same location when using the 8.04 LTS server
kernel on an NFS4 server, and
changing to the 8.10 server kernel fixed the issue.
Is there a point in supplying more information, i.e. are you actually
interested in fixing this bug in the server LTS?

Public bug reported:

I had problems with opreport crashing with the message "error:
basic_string::erase". I'm on Intrepid, but I also tried building the
package source from Jaunty with the same result.
This seems to be the exact same bug that is described in upstrea
The shell script in the Debian/Ubuntu package is unnecessary since
mhWaveEdit 1.4.14, because now a default value for LADSPA_PATH is
compiled in.
If you add significant things to the package such as man pages, please
consider sending them for inclusion upstream.
Best regards, /Magnus

I had the exact same problem with 8.04 server edition. I solved it by
adding some lines to /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd:
#include
/var/lib/samba/* rwk,
/usr/share/samba/panic-action Pxr,

I discovered a way to get rid of this problem:
Open gconf-editor,
Browse to /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb.sysbackup/
Unset both the keys in that 'folder' (or whatever you want to call it)
