Hey, It seems that this problem with chat notifications is gone. Notifications
works fine in thunderbird 38.2.0 in supported LTS 14.04.
I don't know how it's possible, maybe someone accidentally fixed it, so keep it
please.

Any comment from staff? The problem persists in current Thunderbird 3.1.2.
Because Thunderbird is default communication application in Ubuntu, using all
its features without any obstacles is important. Chat is currently useless.

Thunderbirg in the 14.04 stable has the chat feature. There is default chat
notification enabled and sound notification enabled (Preferences/Chat - Show
notification). I have this one checked.
