Well, technically spoken it is not invalid but a real bug:
* KDE does no longer work after an upgrade so the upgrade process is buggy.
* Before the upgrade this was a KUBUNTU so I actually expect to have a fully
operational KDE after the upgrade.

Ok, I just found the solution in

I needed to "apt-get install kdebase-workspace" manually after the dist-upgrade.

Public bug reported:
I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04-RC.
Since this upgrade I no longer can start KDE sessions. I can log into KDM and
the splash screen appears but the animation is killed before it is finished.
Then the login tune is played and the screen stays with the background
