Confirmed this bug affects Debian and likely all distributions derived
from it. Barrier 2.4.0 installed from distribution repositories, i.e.
sudo apt install barrier
Directory for SSL certificate on Linux (at least Debian and friends) is:
/home/lubod/.local/share/barrier/SSL

Oddly, it appears to have fixed itself. I know I've rebooted at least
once and installed other packages. (Though I'd think normally only
logging out and back in is required, and I did that several times before
I took the first screens

One more vote for "still present in 16.04.1". If the package simply did "sudo
touch /etc/libuser.conf" at the end of the install, the problem vanishes. As
demonstrated by jmarkus on ubuntuforums.org.

And then this crashed towards the end of the update.

For me the command given: sudo mv /lib/modules/`uname -r`/sound/acore
/root/acore
errored out, because I have a kernel directory between uname -r and
sound. Stock Intrepid 8.10 install aside from the aforementioned
external ALSA modules. I typed this instead:
sudo mv /lib/modules/`unam
