Same issue when upgrading from 14.04.4 to 16.04, with this message when doing
an 'apt-get -f install':
Initializing machine ID from D-Bus machine ID.
Failed to mount /etc/machine-id: Not a directory
Moving /etc/machine-id away and recalling apt-get -f install does the
trick
