I use a combination of libnss-ldap and libnss-db. With "bind_policy
soft" in libnss-ldap.conf I can boot without any problem. My
nsswitch.conf look like this:
passwd: files db [SUCCESS=return] ldap
group: files db [SUCCESS=return] ldap
shadow: files ldap
