I am also having the same problem. I don't think the solution suggested
by Blackpaw will work because he is talking about WiFi, and the problem

I've run into the same problem with my Microstar laptop. Luckily my
laptop's internal wireless card (RaLink) seems to be working under 8.04,
although I prefer to use wired internet when possible. I may end up
punting back to 7.10 for the time being if there isn't a work-around for
this.
