i am having the same problem updating udev
i tried sudo delgroup input just incase it fixed it but when updating i
get the following then it looks like it hangs here:
Setting up udev (225-1ubuntu9.1) ...
Adding group `input' (GID 145) ...
Done.
but it never actually finishes postinst

i added nomodeset as that was the only way the beta1 graphical install worked,
the other was added in an effort to fix the issue
removing both fixed the black screen and low res issues thank you

the black screen happens after grub and before lightdm loads, for me it stays
black due to needing a password for my encrypted boot drive, but i never see
this prompt due to the black screen
i can type this password in even with the blank screen and X is then shown but
the resolution is still 80
might need to be changed to package xserver-xorg-video-intel

regardless of the USB hdd being connected during the boot process
if the usb hdd is not connected during the boot process the system boots fine

issue so i can only assume the issue is with the kernel or in the way
another package interacts with the kernel to support USB mounting that
