I had a similar crash with the same assertion fail when changing volume
with pavucontrol.
I removed ~/.pulse/ and haven't had the same problem anymore. As always,
you should still make a backup before deleting that directory.

I have this bug on Jaunty 64-bit using GNOME. I have Geforce GTX 285 and
185.18.14 drivers.
The problem occurs quite rarely. Usually after my computer has been on
for the whole day. The system freezes randomly for three seconds and I
get a lot of graphical glitches. These messages are spammed on X
I have the same problem. I can play usually a bit longer though. Maybe
10 - 30 minutes. Then I just get back to the login screen.

I got some extra details. Recording from the monitor device works, but
changing the device while recording causes the problem. When I set the
monitor as the default device and after that started recording it
worked. But when I changed the device from the monitor to my real mic it
crashed again.

I updated to Jaunty and now I have 180.44. I still have the problem. It
is very similar to this, but if this is already fixed then it must be
caused by a differend reason. But really it is very similar to this. The
description fits and Daniele's workaround makes it work temporarily.

I have this problem on my Intrepid with 177 and 180.11 drivers. And also
with 180.37. I attached a picture that shows how it bugs. It gets back
to normal when I run "nvidia-settings -a GPUScaling=1,3" as Daniele
said.
I found out that it does only occur with DVI cables and not with analog
ones.

I'm having very similar problem. When I boot up the machine everything
works fine. After some time (10 minutes to 2 hours) the screen splits. I
can restore it with pressing CTRL+ALT+F1. Then the bug appears again
after some waiting. The mouse cursor etc. behaves just like you
descriped.

I have this problem now. There was never anything with the older
versions, but around Intrepid Alpha2 I got this problem. It worked fine
on the earlier Intrepid..
So the multimedia keys and some of the shortcuts don't work, if I have
numlock on. It depends on the target command, if it works. For e
