an update: I noticed that there is an update (0.43-1), which is a fix,
via the linrunner PPA using:

tp-smapi-dkms 0.41-1: tp-smapi kernel mod
Public bug reported:
I have been trying to upgrade to ubuntu 18.04 from 16.o4 for the past
couple days, but it won't allow me to do it. I think the problem might
be that I installed Ubuntu GNOME when that was still a separate distro,
and that might have broken my system.
ProblemType: Bug
DistroRe
Performing the "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp" and thence
update/upgrade worked fine.
*** Needs to be pushed to the mainline repositories, asap ***

Obviously still an unresolved issue. Just did an Ubuntu update on 16.04 and the
following dialog and errors:
/var/lib/dkms/tp-smapi/0.41/build/make.log
Unpacking tp-smapi-dkms (0.41-1) over (0.41-1) ...
Setting up tp-smapi-dkms (0.41-1) ...
Creating symlink /var/lib/dkms/tp-smapi/0.41/source ->
It has been well over 12 months now and still the fix version 1.1.5 is
*not* in the main repositories for 16.04.
So, simple questions:
Why not?, and
Why is to so?

Working on Ubuntu Desktop 15.04, on a Lenovo X200 laptop.
My little project that led to this: I was getting a DVB-T USB device to
work, then installed the gnome-dvb-control to get EPG info.

Wasted too much time on this same situation with held broken packages.
Re-installing, hopefully it gets fixed upstream and doesn't recur.

Must say I agree with Nick Rundy's comments on 2012-01-25 (above).
We do need a way to track what application is initiating network
traffic, that can (or is) logged to the syslog.
Can we get this progressed to the kernel and iptables teams as a feature
request.
