It would help if I was using an Nvidia card. I'm not. I just realized
the problem probably stems from the Nouveau project targetting Nvidia
GPUs. A more helpful kernel message would have been useful. Not sure why
the module even loaded in the first place. Oh well.

Ricardo, I've observed this issue on hardware running without any
proprietary drivers. In that case, they were using a System76 machine
with an integrated Intel GPU.
