The latest 13.0.151 kernel has the same issue, at least on this laptop.
This also means that whatever security updates are rolled into the
mainline kernels are in effect inaccessible to laptop users affected by
this issue. :-(

Yes, thanks for that, but what I mean is that upgrading the kernel on an
installed 12.10 will not directly test the iso booting issue unless there is a
way to regenerate a new iso with the upgraded kernel - see #5.

Joseph, I haven't actually installed 12.10a3 on the iMac yet, though I
may do that in the next couple of days. Don't I need to have it
installed in order to install the latest kernel? My testing so far was
only on the LiveCD boot, which boots on 12.10 with acpi=off, but didn't
boot at all with 12

At the man+keyboard screen, press any key and accept English, then press
F6, then move to acpi=off and press Space to select it, and Esc. Then
press Ret
