Since I accepted the ssl certificate manually it has been working. I'm not an
expert but this could have been resolved by #758831.
(I do notice that the source of the login does not seem to have a direct https
address to a captcha?

Yes. I initially tried on two different machines (Mac with firefox, and
Ubuntu with firefox) and in both cases the captch was not displayed.
After manually connecting to the captcha url and accepting the security
keys on one machine (Mac) the captcha showed up on the mac and when I
tried a little l
