http://google.com/search?q=2.6.24+snd_hda_intel suggests that this very
much is a kernel problem. It also seems that this bug has been fixed in
2.6.25, which was just released, but probably won't make it into Ubuntu
before 8.10.

Ah! From Bug #217816 we learn that while sound does not work with
-generic kernel, it does work with -rt kernel.

Susan: your bug does not look like a duplicate. With this bug, there is
no sound at all, as the system doesn't see any soundcards (cat
/proc/asound/oss/sndstat tells us "no soundcards").
This bug remains with 2.6.24-16-generic

[hardy] Sound card hda Intel doesn't work with kernel 2.6.24 serie
I've been keeping my Hardy up to date, and while no progress as such,
there's been some slight changes.
Kernel from Fri Apr 4 03:48:31 UTC 2008 to:
$ cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.16 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux ace-of-spades 2.6.24-15-generic #1 SMP Tue Apr
I've got a laptop, Dell Vostro 1700.
