Thanks for pointing out uninstalling the shell extensions. I had the
same problem and switching off all custom shell extensions helped
instantly.

After distribution upgrade from hardy to jaunty (amd64 here), it is no
longer possible to save the auto-upgrade/download settings in a
persistent manner. Changing the toggles works, but closing an re-opening
the dialog yields the old settings without the user's modifications.

Auto-update settings are kept in /etc/apt.conf.d/10periodic.
There was also /etc/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades, perhaps a remnant of an older
version of the updater's instrumentation.
Removing the 20auto-upgrades file restores the desired behaviour.

It seems to me that the data acquisition for file sizes wedges at some point
(mostly JPEG files) and does not continue from there.

Addendum: Intrepid with all updates as of last week: It still happens from time
to time.
I can't recognize a pattern, though.
Perhaps it has to do with QT's handling of transparency vs. the nVidia drivers,
as goto mentioned before?

Update:
After some investigation, switching from pulseaudio to native ALSA solved 80%
of the problem.
Now, most of the time, Videos and Flash movies will play, but every 5th or so
not. A page reload solves the symptom, but the bug is still there...

I can second that (hardy/x86_64 as of 2008-05-08).
The corruption takes place after a certain amount of time.
It looks like the buffer for translucency of the icon fetches the background
bitmap from a wrong mem address (my uneducated guess)...
