OK, I think I somehow fixed it by manually editing xorg.conf. It is
enclosed.

I also cannot get 1280x800 with Ubuntu 8.10 on the same notebook. The
Xorg.0.log is enclosed. I installed all the available updates on Feb 20
2009.
