keep the monitor always ON. No blanking, and no power down either.
Before this fix, a clean install of Ubuntu server would signal the
monitor to sleep/standby after a short while. Now the default behavior
is to leave the monitor

I have installed aMule (dapper) in edgy for testing. aMule (dapper) did
not crash in dapper, so I though it was worth testing.
As a result, aMule (dapper) will crash in edgy in just the same way. I
don't know how to provide in-depth crash analysis so that is all I can
offer for now. But this could
the problem can also be reproduced by pressing the "Clear" button. Which
essentially closes any open tabs, thus triggering the bug.
Example:
1) start amule
2) search for something, e.g. "Ubuntu"
3) Press the "Clear" button.
=> Crash.
It doesn't seem to matter if the search is in progress or done.
Removing the imake dependency is not the best fix, as imake (dapper) provides
xmknf.
A "Conflict" would be more appropriate.

Desktop CDs (Live CDs) suggest a minimum of 192 MB of RAM.
This may be the cause of the problem.
It is possible edgy makes more use of the expected 192 MB of RAM, when

knot1 (amd64) == OK (looks like VGA or TV test signal, as expected)
knot2 (amd64) = FAILED (blinking underscore)

I can confirm this bug on the following hardware:
AMD64 2800+ (Socket 754)
nVidia 6600 GT (AGP)
Ubuntu Version: edgy-desktop-amd64.iso (knot2)
(Used as a live environment)
Booting from the CD works,
but no splash screen on startup or shutdown.
PS: Works fine with knot1
