Can confirm that the fix from xjbhenry worked for me as well (previously
the system was 16.04, then 17.?? and then upgraded to 18.04).

After a recent update in 18.04, in XFCE/Xubuntu, when I start an XFCE
terminal, and run the 'groups' command, I only see my primary group show
up. If I log into the system via ssh, I see all the groups associated

The magic combo that worked for me on a fresh install of Ubuntu Xenial
16.04.3 LTS (on a new Dell Precision workstation - not a laptop) was:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1920x1200
Of course the GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX should match your monitor's

This seems to still be an issue on the Gateway LT3119u; PC-BSD (free
bsd) for instance, does not have this issue.
