working by disabling and then re-enabling the 'Pointer location' switch

login screen, whereby the "dots" pattern did not line up properly with
the new default wallpaper.
Now when locking the screen I have noticed that the dots pattern is in

Compiz crashes on my system when it is, so I get no unity when it is
installed, and slow to the point of unusable unity when I remove it.

This isn't just happening in Firefox, it happens with different
applications open; it is not clear what is causing it. I could describe
it as "random", rather than having any particular pattern. I cannot find
a way to reproduce it.

the file "/etc/hosts" had been corrupted during a prior update -- there should
be a line of the form:
