Me too.
dpkg-reconfigure didn't solve the problem, but removing and reinstalling has.

I have just installed 10.04 (in parallel with 9.10) and find I have the
same problem here (and also with the Live CD).
A few bits of information incase it is helpful:
Matrox G550 graphics card
Ubuntu 2.6.32-22-generic
x86_64
I'm going back to 9.10 for now.
