My recollection is that I had applied all available updates to my
release before attempting the Version Upgrade. But I can no longer
reproduce any of this because I then performed the version upgrade,
after which everything worked. Sorry for taking so long to get back to

It turns out that running from the command line was not enough: the
upgrade application failed to connect to the X server. So I edited the
menu item itself to pass --version-upgrade to adept_manager, and that
seems to be working.
