No, this is not a regular issue for me. It happened once, seemingly
randomly, and that's it. I don't know how to recreate it.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: evolution
When I try to print an email, evolution always tries to print to A4
paper. I've set /etc/papersize to 'letter', rebooted, removed and added
my printer, and set all the paper size entries in the GNOME print panel
to Letter, but evolution insists
Seeing it here too, also Edgy.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xchat
I use the latest xchat from Edgy. I installed Opera from the commercial
repository, and now xchat uses Opera for all of its "open link in
browser" commands. I checked Preferred Applications, and it's still set
to firefox.
** Affects: xchat (Ubuntu)
Wonderful, thank you.
I did your tests, and they worked as intended. So I set the printout
mode option using the CUPS web interface, and the printer is now
printing grayscale as intended.
So this is definitely a gnome-cups-manager problem.
