Same problem in Karmic
Fixed it by adding:
Device "Default Device"
under the Screen section.

I can confirm this. I've been having this problem since the Hardy
release. It can be a few minutes, or a few hours. I've been searching
for a fix or workaround for about a year now, and haven't come up with
anything. I get no errors, or anything, it just stops working. PLEASE
HELP if anybody knows
Removing PulseAudio worked for me.
