I too am experiencing this issue and it does appear to be an upstream
problem. It sounds like the commonality is HP hardware and kernel

It looks like this is a problem only for upgrading users. It is a
problem with improper cleanup/linking of the iptables program. this will
need to be fixed in the package to properly clean up all old files
and/or install new files. See below:

I can also confirm on kubuntu dapper. Permissions also get reset after
reboot like Michael Hirsch. Also, I checked
/etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules and have 'KERNEL=="null",
MODE="0666"' as it should be.

We know. This is the first step we tried. The lack of effectiveness is noted

Upon further research, it appears that this package is having issues
with the latest version of libc6-i386 based on the following:
"You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.

You might try to remove the xorg driver. Also you can download the xfree one
and force install it using dpkg. What distro of linux are you using and are
