I just updated to Hardy Beta and the issue is gone...
The update brought a new xorg, a new nvidia driver, and I believe a
xinerama update... so who knows which fixed it, but anyway the bug is
gone hooray!

h
yup... still an issue... though I've determined that it has nothing to do
with the ssh connection. since it happens with video files on the local
machine too.
I think it may have to do with the dual monitor setup. perhaps xinerama, or
the proprietary nvidia driver

I used the Screens and graphics utility to auto-generate my xorg.conf.
I'm pretty certain it's using Xinerama (this may be the root of the
problem)
The xorg.conf is attached

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: totem
If you fullscreen totem while watching a video file and let it play
until it's over (it has to end while fullscreened) then you won't be
able to exit fullscreen.
Totem DOES temporarily exit fullscreen (for 50... maybe 100
milliseconds) and then pop
I can reproduce this effect with ANY video file... I am using Ubuntu

Update:
I got the same thing while trying to play a WMA audio file, instead of
the visualization. Now I'm really confused.
it was playing one WMA file, then I double clicked another one while
totem was still playing and I got the green scramble again instead of
the visualization.
some more info:
For me it reports the permissions as unknown, and doesn't allow me to
change them (even though I'm looking at files owned by my current user)

after more testing, I noticed it only happens if you leave it paused for
a while... a few minutes at least. I think it may have to do with the
connection timing out. if you close totem and wait ~the same amount of
time and then reopen the file from nautilus the problem doesn't reoccur.
I guess that

I'm using feisty (7.04). I don't have the both external hard drives any more
(one was a friends), but when I tried to close the nautilus window I got a
"Wait / force quit" dialog and had to force quit because nautilus was
frozen. however, the files continued transferring until I did the force
quit.
so the answer about the CLI is I don't know. sorry, I didn't really finish
that idea.

The software isn't necessarily *BROKEN*, but I think this still
qualifies as a bug:
So you plug 2 USB mass storage devices into the computer and mount them
both. You then open both of these devices in nautilus (each in it's own
window). Proceed
