These are the steps it took:
1. sudo apt-get install gdm
2. sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm, choose gdm3 here and reboot

The problem seems to be limited to a certain iso file, while I am able
to select other iso files. To make sure its not damaged I have now
downloaded the iso file a second time from

I can reproduce this on a 2nd machine. I forgot to mention there is no
error message or any information given about what went wrong.

Since the upgrade to 13.10 two days ago my laptop goes into hibernation
mode when I close the lid. This was not the case before. This is despite
my XFCE4 configuration 'On AC' 'Actions'

to restart the system. When I choose 'Log Out' at the bottom of the list
of the 'start' button, followed by 'Restart' in the dialog window, I get
to the login manager instead.

The Xine-lib recently got updated to Version 1.1.8
(1.1.8-2ubuntu2~gutsy1) but libxine-xvdr still depends on version <<
1.1.8 so it got automatically uninstalled and is not installable at the
moment.
I think it just needs to by rebuilt again
