To continue my above comment, I have booted back into ubuntu (13.04)
and, as I'd hoped, the battery is present and charging.

Simply running the HP Support Assistant to update the BIOS worked for
me. I have an HP Pavilion dv7. The LED next to the power adapter was
blinking white, and neither ubuntu nor windows could find the battery.
