This should be fixed when Emacs gets updated to 23.2 and built with
gconf (and font-use-system-font set is set to non-nil.) No telling when
that might happen, though:

list to make the sound on my Vostro 1015 work, and the author of those
patches has the same model as well. Those patches were integrated into
the 1.0.22.1 release of ALSA, which in turn has been integrated into
linux-backports-

There's still the workaround of manual toggle, but there has been a new
release of alsa-drivers that incorporates patches for this chipset.
You could either:
a.) use the ppa:ricotz/unstable to get up-do-date alsa with a newer kernel, but
unfortunately, it's only for karmic, and it likely wouldn't

There does seem to be a glitch. After attaching and removing a jack into
the external mic port, the built-in mic starts working. It seems that it
defaults to the external one, but this sets it correct.

I have the same laptop. Installing newer alsa-drivers or the headphone
hint do not help. A workaround is the following:
I. install hda-verb.
1. wget
