I have also had this problem with a new Ubuntu 8.04 final ISO downloaded

I've also tried multiple burns cd's etc booting either with standard
options or with nopic nolapic safe graphics etc makes no difference.
Boot process passes grub screen starts to boot and Usplash freezes at
about 10% and stays there indefinitely.
Xubuntu i386 works fine.

bizzarely I can't make this happen with a differnet machine running the
ubuntu (rather than xubuntu) live cd. Also when I tried before the hard
drive I was using had no existing partitions so I'll try that as well
and post results if I can make it happen again.

I overcame this by just installling the foomatic-db-gutenprint package

You recei
definitely a usplash issue remove splash from the kernel boot options
and it boots up ok ( if a bit slowly, not sure if that' just because its
running from cd).
Safe graphics mode (vesa driver) doesn't cure it.

bios and entering acppi=off noappic nolapic paramters doesn'e help.
I breifly see a message saying kernel alive and then something about
mapping to an address ten noting more.
