I thought this bug was fixed? Because in 12.04/Precise Pangolin, the
checksumming still fails. Only now the script is designed to look for sha256
sums, but the download list is showing MD5 sums.

Yes, both users have rights to access audio. As I said, it is only the
*first* user that will get sound, regardless of which user that may be.
The second user, regardless of which one it is, will not have sound.
Checking with gnome-sound-properties, both users are set up to use Alsa
