I was able to get sound working by entering "alsamixer" in a terminal, arrow
right to "Independ", then
arrow up to toggle the setting from "off" to "on". Simple solution for me,
although required a little
troubleshooting.

I have the same chip as the OP and have no sound from the rear audio line in(I
don't have headphones).
No problem with 11.04 on this computer.

I had this happen tonight in the middle of posting a thread on the Ubuntu
forum(probably due to a keystroke combination I used). I have(had) a fully
updated Hardy Alpha 6 install, System-Preferences-Keyboard had no effect when
changing the default back to USA.
Pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 and ran "sudo
I also have the same Sis integrated video controller(VGA compatible
controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760) and am getting
the same error message at shutdown.
