Sorry, my daily computing experience is now on a MacBook Pro rather than
my old laptop, and thus on OSX rather than Ubuntu. I had upgraded it to
lucid but wasn't sure if the problem was still there. Just dug out the
laptop and updated everything now:
$ sudo aptitude update
...
$ sudo aptitude safe
I'd close this. Only ever had the problem one time; can't reproduce and
no-one else appears to have hit it.

errors?
I did see this problem with both my laptop and home server when I
upgraded, which to me implies that it may be a reproducible error of
some sort, rather than a localised to one machine corruption?
