Arrays declared global in function and initialised in same line are not
visible outside of function.
This is solved in patch 25 for Bash 4.2 but it's not available in Ubuntu

This was annoying me too, so until we get a fix for this, you can try
this workaround I documented here:

It is by no means a solution, but it might bring the family back to
Linux :)
