1. I installed ubuntu-desktop-minimal.
2. I did sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 to switch from lightdm to gdm3
3. reboot
4. No display. Logging in via ssh I see:

Yes, the SATA controller on that old Xeon box is a little strange and has been
so for at least 4 years.
This never affected the Gnome desktop before.
I installed lightdm as a workaround and it comes up okay.
I wonder what is wrong with gdm3.

The gdm3 desktop does not come up.
I tried uninstalling gdm3 and reinstalling, which did not change the
problem.
I have installed lightdm as an alternative.
