I found a solution: I used an usb hub for the mouse. I think it is
something about the power supply: the hub would introduce a
discontinuity in the signal and this acts like a replug.
I bet the software driver has a bad initialized variable somewhere. It
is set correctly only after the first replu

Come on! It's a really boring bug. 2 months confirmed, unassigned and
undecided... It's unbelievable! Do you know that some PC have not easily
accessible ports? I can't replug the mouse everytime i reboot the PC.

On HP G7000 laptop if I boot Interpid 8.10, unplug the USB mouse and
enable the Touch Pad (it has an on/off button) the system freezes and
caps lock led begins flashing. This happends
DeathStrikeVirus' solution (2-3 posts above) worked for me (Interpid).
Installed Ubuntu 8.10 on desktop pc with two nvidia 7900gs in sli mode.
System was running ok until I installed the close source nvidia's driver
