i can't remember the full ubuntu release history, but bionic(18.04LTS) shipped
with assimp/4.1.0~dfsg-3.

this is (well: was) really a problem with Gem, rather than Pd.
Since then, Gem has changed a lot (and now dynamically loads
ImageMagick, so even if there was a problem as described, Gem would
still be able to load).
In any case, the problem seems to have been solved since a couple of
years (and I

- is your soundcard supporting full-duplex at all?
- are other applications able to play back sound properly?
- have you tried adjusting the buffersize?
- have you tried using JACK instead of ALSA (or the other way round)?
