Adolfo could you please explain why you think that this bug doesn't
affect update-manager? As several people stated (and I can confirm) it
is reproducible in Xubuntu -> no Unity and no Compiz involved...

Simon, plain black is used as tooltip color in Greybird.
I was able to work around this issue by doing the following:
- sudo leafpad /usr/share/themes/Greybird/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
- search for the line that reads gtk_color_scheme =
"tooltip_bg_color:#00\ntooltip_fg_color:#E1E1E1" # Tooltips.
