It seems to be a secure boot / UEFI issue. Retrying with the same
bootentry and a minimal install also failed. I briefly saw something
about grub not being able to write somewhere in the install console.
Unfortunately I am not able to copy the text here, because the error

When starting a fresh install for Ubuntu 18.04.1 I encountered this bug.
The system has an SSD with Windows 10 on other partitions and the Ubuntu
system should go on there while the /home partition has its own disk. I
selected the SSD as the target to install grub.
